The main reason I got into DIY is because I knew my soul lived in Cuteville. The problem is, the version of cute that exists out there doesn’t always hit the way I want it to.
I feel like I sit at a few different intersections of kawaii aesthetics. I lean a little Decora, I like dreaminess, and I love pink. I just need it to have a bit more of a bold edge without drifting too dark. Sometimes what’s available just doesn’t match that energy, so I started taking things into my own hands.
After I got my Switch 2, the first thing I thought about was the custom controllers I had for my OLED Switch. Then I realized most of my accessories weren’t compatible anymore. Total bummer, but I knew it was coming.
After looking around, the options for Switch 2 accessories feel limited. And the console itself is really giving SWAT team. I just can’t and I won’t.
What I’m Customizing
These are the pieces I’m planning to customize one way or another:
The dock
The Joy-Cons
Travel case
The controller and controller stand
What I’m Not Doing
I’m not going to fight the black color of the console. It feels like too much to overcome. I’m sure Nintendo will release a cosmetically different version eventually, but I already waited for this one. I’ll make it work.
Skins and decals have never been my thing. There’s too much pressure to get it perfect on the first try. One bubble and it’s over. That’s not fun for me.
I also decided against removable shells. Even though there are thinner options now, I’m not planning to rhinestone them. I do play handheld, and even tiny stones would probably make it uncomfortable over time.
Also, I know myself. If stones fall off, I’m not going to fix them. I’ll just stare at the bald spot and be annoyed.
Problems I’ll Probably Run Into
I don’t fully know what supplies I have right now. I’m getting ready to move, so I’m trying to get organized and not buy things I don’t need. I think I have enough to get started, but I’ll probably need to pick up some specific items like dock faceplates and a controller stand.
I also want to use deco whip in some way. I’ve worked with white silicone, simulation creams, and I’ve made my own colored whip using clear silicone and glitter. This time I want to try pigments, which I’ve never used before. So there’s definitely potential for something to go wrong.
I also want to try different piping tips, so I’ll probably do a test run before I bring it to the actual dock.
I want to incorporate my Birthday Bears into this, but I have no clear plan for them yet. I have a feeling I’m going to overdo it, so I keep telling myself to keep it simple.
Will I listen? Probably not.
Conclusion
Even though my direction is a little loose, I know it’s going to end up cuter than it is now one way or another.
I’ll probably spend more money than I’d like, but I’m still going to do it.
This feels like a good project series to wake this blog back up. I want to show what works and what doesn’t. I also know how frustrating it is to try a DIY and have it look nothing like the picture.
A lot of what’s out there doesn’t show the failures. If I fail, I’m going to tell you about it. Promise.
